About the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery I

Our department is the oldest surgical department in Hokkaido, having been established as the Department of Surgery in 1921 along with the establishment of the University Hospital and subsequently becoming the Department of Surgery I in 1924 with the establishment of the Department of Surgery II.

The Department of Pediatric Surgery was established in 1999and the Department of Surgery I changed its name to the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery & General Surgery. Donated fund projects have also been established, namely the Department of Organ Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine in 2001, the Department of Molecular Surgery in 2007, and the Department of Transplantation Surgery in 2011. In 2011, the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery & General Surgery (formerly the Department of Surgery I) changed its name to the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery I following the reorganization of the department, and the Department of Breast and Endocrine Surgery (a medical care department) was establishment and the Department of Pediatric Surgery was incorporated again in the department to form the present organization.

In November 2011, Professor Akinobu Taketomi came from Kyushu University to assume the post of the department's seventh professor. The department provides multidisciplinary treatment centering on surgery based on the latest medical research for gastrointestinal diseases (liver, biliary tract, pancreas, esophagus, stomach, intestines), pediatric surgical diseases, and breast and endocrine diseases (in collaboration with the Department of Breast and Endocrine Surgery), including transplantation medicine which was established by the department's Former Professor Satoru Todo.

Our department is Hokkaido's first surgical school and currently has approximately 160 members and over 550 alumni who engage in cutting-edge research in Hokkaido and in/outside Japan, daily general surgical treatment or community healthcare, widely contributing to the development of medicine and the improvement of medical care standards.
