Research Groups

Gastrointestinal surgery

The group's main focus of research is on colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases. The group works to analyze markers to grade malignancy and establish molecular target therapy, similar to the research of the Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Group. The group's activities also include basic research on metastasis and the growth of cancer, tumor immunity and the study of cancer vaccines for clinical application. In particular, we study diagnosis methods such as gene analysis techniques and the detection of tumor cells in the bloodstream in order to identify factors related to recurrence in patients whose tumors were removed completely, with the aim of providing safer surgical treatment. Research is also conducted to establish a new molecular target therapy for inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g., Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis).
